FAQ

Answers to common questions about working with National Restaurant Design, our food service design process, project costs, timelines, and more.

What does a food service designer do?

A food service designer plans the functional areas of a restaurant or other food service operation, including kitchen and service layouts, equipment placement and specifications, workflow, and the technical information needed to coordinate the design with the larger project.

When should I bring a food service designer into my project?

Ideally, once you have a location and are ready to begin planning the space. NRD needs information about the physical space, your concept, menu, equipment needs, and operations to develop the design.

How much does restaurant design cost?

NRD charges are based on the project's square footage, with the rate varying by the scope and complexity of the work. You’ll receive an agreed-upon, all-inclusive project quote.

How long does the restaurant design process take?

Timing depends on the size and complexity of the project. A smaller project may take around two weeks, while a typical 150-seat restaurant may take three to four weeks. Large or complex projects can take several months.

How involved will I be in the design process?

Very. NRD begins by learning about your concept, operation, and space, then develops a fit plan for review. You’ll have opportunities to critique the design and request changes throughout the process. Revisions continue until you are satisfied with the final design.

Does NRD work on both renovations and new construction?

Yes. National Restaurant Design works on both renovations of existing spaces and new construction. Each presents different considerations, and the design process begins with understanding the specific conditions of the space.

Do I need an architect in addition to a food service designer?

In most cases, yes. NRD specializes in the food service portion of the project and is not an architectural, mechanical engineering, or interior design firm. NRD’s food-service drawings are designed to coordinate with the architect's larger drawing set.

Can National Restaurant Design work with my architect?

Yes. NRD regularly works alongside architects, providing the specialized food-service layouts, equipment plans, specifications, and technical information needed for the project. NRD can also recommend architects or contractors when appropriate.

Does NRD handle permits and health department requirements?

The project's architect typically handles permitting. NRD provides the food-service drawings and technical information needed for the project and may also assist with documentation required for health department review.

Does National Restaurant Design sell restaurant equipment?

No. NRD designs and specifies equipment but does not sell it. This allows equipment recommendations to be based on what best fits the concept, menu, volume, workflow, space, and budget rather than on equipment sales.

How does NRD choose equipment for a restaurant?

Equipment is selected based on the needs of the operation, including the concept, menu, expected volume, workflow, available space, and budget. The goal is to specify equipment that supports the operation without unnecessarily oversizing or over-equipping the space.

Does National Restaurant Design work nationwide?

Yes. NRD works with restaurant owners, architects, and food service partners on projects throughout the United States.
